Robert J. Gatchel, Ph. D., University of Texas at Arlington, Chair of the Department of Psychology

Robert J. Gatchel, Ph. D., is the Chair of the Department of Psychology in the College of Science of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. In addition, he is the Program Director of the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Professional Psychology and is on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Health Psychology. He has conducted extensive clinical research, most of it supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on the psychophysiology of stress and emotion, the co morbidity of psychological and physical health disorders, and the etiology, assessment and treatment of chronic stress and pain behavior.

He is also the recipient of consecutive Research Scientist Development Awards from NIH. He has published over 225 scientific articles and 73 book chapters, and has authored or edited 22 books. He is also on the editorial boards of numerous psychological and medical journals.

Over the years, he has received numerous awards, including: the Volvo Award for Low Back Pain Research in 1986; North American Spine Society's 2001 Henry Farfan Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Spine Care; The Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field in 2002; the Texas Psychological Association's 2003 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Science; and the American Psychological Association's 2004 Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Research.
